Fans learned this week that Margot Robbie has signed on to create a movie version of the boardgame Monopoly. Robbie’s LuckyChap banner will collaborate with Lionsgate in order to adapt this Hasbro for the big screen. Lionsgate revealed the project on Wednesday at CinemaCon 2024.
From Board Game to Blockbuster: Margot Robbie’s ‘Monopoly’ Movie Plot Leaked!
According to a report , Robbie will be working with partners Tom Ackerley & Josey McNamara for Monopoly. Hasbro Entertainment is also producing. Kevin Hart was originally set to star in a Monopoly film, but has reportedly backed out. This project has not yet been cast, nor have plot details or an estimated release date been revealed.
Robbie and LuckyChap seem to be chasing after the success of Barbie by making other movies that are based on retro toys and games. The company announced plans to make a film adaptation The Sims just a few short weeks ago. Kate Herron will direct and Briony Redman will co-write the script. Robbie, McNamara, and Ackerley are developing the idea.
Hasbro is currently working on over 30 screen adaptions, including a Dungeons & Dragons for Paramount+, to follow the success of The Honor Among Thieves. Development is not a guarantee of production. So, it’s unlikely that all those projects will be realized.
Monopoly first appeared as a boardgame in 1935. It has changed and evolved a great deal over the years. Almost half a million copies of the board game have been sold. Different versions include real-life places, fictional franchises and real-life changes in infrastructure. The players move around the board, trading and developing properties to increase their value. It’s not clear what the film will look like without any established characters or stories.
Robbie, McNamara and Ackerley seem to be excited about the game. On Wednesday, they released a statement saying that “Monopoly was a top-notch property – pun intended.” This game, like all the best IPs, has been a favorite for generations. We are excited to work with the Lionsgate and Hasbro teams to bring it to life.
Adam Fogelson, Lionsgate’s executive director, said: “I couldn’t imagine a more perfect production team to represent this iconic and beloved brand than LuckyChap.” They are outstanding producers who select their projects with care and consider the impact they will have on Monopoly. “We are incredibly excited to work with the entire LuckyChap Team on what we believe will be their next blockbuster.”
Sims and Monopoly are currently in development, but no date has been set for their production or debut. Barbie can be viewed on Max.
