“Justice or Tragedy? You Won’t Believe What Happened When Sonya Massey Called 911”

As seen on a body-cam video released on Monday, Sonya Massey apologized and ducked to an Illinois deputy sheriff seconds before he fatally shot her three times at home.

Last week, an Illinois grand jury indicted Sean Grayson (30), a former Sangamon County Sherriff’s Deputy. He is white. He has pleaded no contest to charges of first degree murder, aggravated assault with a gun and official misconduct.

The video confirms the earlier version of the prosecution of that tense moment, when Grayson shouted at Massey from across a counter to put down a hot water pot. Grayson then threatened to shoot Massey, Massey dodged, rose briefly, and Grayson shot his pistol at Massey.

Authorities reported that Massey, 36 had earlier called 911 to report a suspected prowler. The video shows that the two deputies arrived at her Springfield home just before 1 am on July 6, 200 miles (322 km) southwest of Chicago. The deputies walked around her house, and discovered a black SUV in the driveway with broken windows.

Massey opened the door three minutes after the deputies had knocked and said immediately, “Don’t harm me.”

She was confused when they approached the door and repeated that she wanted help. She referred to God and said she didn’t even know who owned the vehicle.

Deputies were exasperated when she was asked to sit on the couch in her house and go through her purse. They wanted identification so they could complete a report. Grayson then pointed to a pot on the stove that was sitting on flame.

He said, “We don’t want a fire to start while we are here.”

Massey got up immediately and moved the pot to a sink. She and Grayson appeared to laugh together over the pan of “steaming water” she was holding, before she said unexpectedly: “I rebuke your in the name Jesus.”

“You better not (expletive), or I swear to God, I’ll shoot you (expletive), in your face.” Then he pulled out his 9mm pistol, and demanded that she drop the pot.

Grayson’s footage shows Massey saying, “OK, sorry.” He pointed his gun at her. She raised her arms and ducked.

Grayson was in the living area, facing Massey. A counter separated the living room from the kitchen. The prosecution has said that the separation gave Grayson “distance” and “relative cover” from Massey, and the hot water pot.

Grayson told his partner not to grab a medical kit in order to save the woman after Grayson had shot her.

He said, “You can get it but that is a headshot.” “There’s absolutely nothing you can do.”

He asked: “What other options are there?” “I’m not going to put hot (expletive), boiling water on your face (expletive).”

Massey still breathing, he conceded and promised to get his own kit. The other deputy replied, “We could at least stop the bleeding.”

Grayson said to the police that she had boiling water, and was coming at him with it. She came at me, with boiling water, saying she was going rebuke in the name Jesus.

Ben Crump, civil rights lawyer and Grayson family attorney, called the “revisionists” explanation of Grayson “disingenuous” during a news conference on Monday afternoon.

“She needed help.” Crump told Massey that she did not require a bullet in her face.

Crump responded that Massey had been treated for mental issues. He said that she had invoked God from the start of the encounter, and requested her Bible when the deputies entered.

Crump, who had viewed the video with his family, said that it would “shock America’s conscience” at Massey’s funeral.

James Wilburn demanded that the county court system was transparent and open in its investigation, prosecution, and public relations.
